Monitor-Pro WebServer functionality
Navigation
is familiar to the browser user. The home page provides picture links to the
main areas of functionality and these are then
repeated across the header of every page to simplify navigation through the
system.
Security

Users log on in a conventional mode
using the same user permissions and password system for Monitor-Enterprise and
then select which database they would like to log on to. This means that users
are interchangeable between the modes of Monitor-pro systems use.

Navigation
Users can proceed from the main menu directly into any area of the
system. The system is best understood from three areas of end user need:
Performance
or compliance at a site
If the user selects main map they
will be provided with an SVG map of all the sites or detailed level management
locations used in the database. From here the user can select the site they want
to investigate in more detail. Sites can be selected either by clicking on
them on the map or by picking them from the scroll list in the bottom left
corner then selecting the ‘go to site map feature.

The map can be navigated using the
arrow controls which provide zoom, pan,
extents to facilitate finding the correct site. If required the legend can be
rolled up to provide a better view. The site map
view now provides a detailed picture of the management information at this
location. This basic map provides an overview of the types of data held at
each location and enables the user to return a quick overview.
Plain
English Querying
The user can also find their information in the
system using our ground breaking plain English querying
system. This enables users to type into a search field their key words. If these
keywords are then found in the database they will be used to form
the basis of a ‘selection’. The tools described above can then be used to
analyse the data returned. This enables in frequent users to use the system
quickly and without training.
Monitor-Pro WebServer technical
details
Monitor-WebServer is a true n-tier,
thin client, web browser based environmental compliance management system.
Monitor-WebServer can be accessed across any TCP/IP based computer network, for
example, the system can be run across a private corporate intranet; the public
internet, or a private extranet using VPN (Virtual Private Network) technology.
When running as an extranet, it is possible that the system can be safely and
securely accessed across a network by the customer and approved third parties,
for example, suppliers, consultants and both national and local regulatory
bodies. Monitor-WebServer can be installed on a customers own network
infrastructure, or alternatively, can be hosted by servers managed by MonitorPro
or a third party technology provider.
Monitor-WebServer server leverages
the existing business logic components, database stored procedures and database
schema used by the Monitor MP-5 product to deliver a solution that offers the
reliability and maturity of a well established market leading product.
Monitor-WebServer provides a mechanism for displaying consistently formatted and
collected information to multiple users across an organisation. This is
particularly relevant to organisations that have multiple sites or remote
workers based at home,
in the field or overseas. The Monitor MP-5 system acts as a system
administrator for the Monitor-WebServer.
he following tables provide a basic
overview of the additional hardware and software requirements to operate the
system.
Architecture
The database is based around Microsoft SQL Server 2000, using a layer of T-SQL
based stored procedures. Business logic is split into a number of layered COM
components, developed using Microsoft Visual Studio 6. The business components
are run only on the server(s), and are made available to Microsoft ASP pages
running under Microsoft IIS 5(Internet Information Server). Server side script
is written using VBScript and client side script, where used, is written in
JavaScript.
The application is truly thin
client, so no ActiveX or Java components are downloaded to the client. The GIS
functionality is provided using an Adobe SVG (Version 3) browser plug in.
Data marshalling between layers is accompanied using XML.
Reporting can be accomplished
either using Seagate Crystal Reports or the emerging XSLT / XML-FO standard.
Reports are output in Adobe PDF format. Monitor-WebServer is compatible with any
modern Microsoft Internet Explorer browser. A
suitable Adobe Acrobat viewer will be required to view or print the standard
reports produced.
Security
For Monitor-Web security and confidentiality of data is of paramount importance.
Monitor-WebServer is secured at each tier using the inbuilt security features of
SQL Server 2000, IIS, the Windows operating system and a number of third party
and proprietary security sub systems, combined with encryption / password
hashing routines. Security can be implemented from the database level
right down to securing an individual sample point.
Scalability
By using Microsoft™s current guidelines for application development, we have
produced a solution that is scalable from a single site system to a full
enterprise wide solution. The database and web server can be run on multiple
servers to offer full redundancy and load-balancing, while coping with an
extremely large data throughput.
